This year this Wiltshire based group of classic car enthusiasts had a raid into neighbouring Hampshire planned, around 60 miles of driving on lovely country roads though the Bourne and Test valleys.
As the group gathered last Sunday 24th September at their HQ, The Swan Inn in the village of Wilton near Marlborough, the air filled with the rumble of engines and as the expectant onlookers waited to see what would arrive next they were treated a a truly eclectic mix of lovely old (and perhaps not so old) classic cars.
There were 20 invited cars: Aston Martins DB5, DB6 and V8 Vantage, AC Aceca, Alfa Giulia 1600 SS, Bentley Arnage T, E-type, Land Rover series II, Daimler Dart, Lotus Elise S Cup, Triumph GT6, Alvis 12/60, 1932 MG, 2 Morgans, BMW 320 and 635, Ferrari Testarossa, Vauxhall Viva rally car and a 1966 Mini. A great mix, and a big surprise for the good folk of Hampshire as the adventurers rolled by. The occasional burst of flame issuing from the exhaust of the Vauxhall may have startled some, but was described as ‘perfectly normal for a race car’ by the owner!
Several adventurers who brought older classics commented that this was the longest run they had attempted in their cars for a while, but that being in a group of enthusiasts gave them the confidence to turn out. All their cars completed the scenic tour without incident.
With a coffee stop at Annie’s Kitchen near Romsey, and lunch for 32 at The Lion at Clanville, near Andover this was a fun day, raising several hundred pounds for the Wiltshire Air Ambulance.
Just great to see these great a classic car out and about being enjoyed on the road on a glorious, sunny autumnal day – but 20 is a treat!
Next year’s classic car outing will also be in late September 2018 – entrants invited to apply now.
